Pretty

Bird of Paradise

Sorry for the paucity of posts this week. Frantically busy at work, and all sorts of dramas and hysterias being thrown here is making for a stressfull and shitty week. So, the perfect antidote for all these dramas, something pretty! When the going gets tough, the tough (or not so tough) distract themselves.

These beautiful Bird of Paradise flowers are growing in a neighbour's front yard, just up the street from my house. Now that Autumn is just around the corner, the days are already getting shorter here, I'm relishing the last of the Summer flowers.

Glad it's not just me.....I cannot believe how quickly the days have gotten shorter. One minute I am out and about at 6am, the next it's too dark to do anything! Grasping at the last straws of summer and daylight/colours seems to be a common habit :-)

This bird of paradise is scrumptious, Andrew. To think it grows freely down the block; I'm jealous! It would be about $7.00 bucks a stem at the local flower mart. You guys have it all. Well...not the snow part.

Sorry to learn of your shitty work week. The sun'll come out tomorrow...bet your bottom dollar...

I'd rather bet a dollar bottom, but I know where you're coming from! :-)

The thing that annoys me is the work stuff, hysteria et al, isn't needed. Seriously, it's just all so unnecessary.

Urgh.

'Pretty-ful'

The Bird of Paradise (Strezlitzia) is certainly a stunning flower, and indeed they are common sights in Sydney. Despite this, they still sell for good dollars per stem here too Michael Guy.

In fact, some years ago in my old neighbourhood and indeed across a number of the more wealthy north-shore suburbs, people were complaining that vandals were stealing large numbers of flowers from local gardens and some considerable plantings in local parks. Turned out later these enterprising young hoods were indeed selling on at flower markets.

Personally, I will miss the last of my local Frangipani flowering the most. That bold white and yellow flower against the tropical green foilage, the heavenly sweet fragrance.

*Sigh*

I miss Summer already.

I heart Strelitzia. round here 'we got both kinds' - narrow and broad leaf. not much difference in the flowers. I think the narrow is a hybrid. they are grown from cuttings from my nanna's garden when she lived at Rhodes... so lovely memories...

I'd love room for the amazing big one that gets to be at least 6m, with huge, creamy white flowers. gah... looks truly stunning. but I've promised myself a pomegranate instead. YUM!

Has anyone else had that old song stuck in their head ALL BECAUSE OF ANDREW?!?! You know, the one where the chorus goes:

May the bird of paradise fly up your nose
May an elephant caress you with his toes
May your wife be plagued with runners in her hose
May the bird of paradise fly up your nose
