I Made Cupcakes

...and they were bloody delicious.

Remember back when I mentioned buying a cupcake recipe book, and consequently worrying whether I was turning into Martha Stewart or just nesting? Well I bought the new cookbook by the Aussie outfit Crabapple Cupcake Bakery. Verdict = FABULOUS. I made a batch to take to the Eurovision Semi-Finals I went to on Saturday night, and some more for the Finals on Sunday.

The cookbook was easy to follow, the recipe worked like a charm and I even picked up some usefull tips along the way (who new that you got better cake results if the moist ingredients, the milk, eggs and butter, were all at room temperature? I certainly didn't). I ended up with waaaaay too much butter frosting left over, I guess because I was supposed to pile it up high in a great big swirl. Still, I put plenty on and I'm not sure that they might have turned out over the top sweet if I piled more on.

Plus there is something oh so wrong, and yet oh so right, about having a tub of butter frosting in the refrigerator... mmmmmm...

Looks fab!

Have you been to that cupcake cafe in Pitt St? They have the most amazing creations in the window. I often walk past it but have never been in.

No I haven't, but I'm a BIG fan of the cupcakes at My Little Cupcake in Neutral Bay. Plus the guys who run the place are really nice.

Betch! Enough with the cupcakes! I am trying to lose a few pounds here.

They sure are pretty, though. And that leftover butter cream frosting...I've got an idea.

meg, the decorations (believe it or not) came from BiLo at Broadway. You can get a little pack of 20 swirls, or a dozen butterlies etc. Their in the cake decorating/baking area.

Amanda, thanks for the link!

MG, frosting huh? Sweeeeeeet!

Sunshine, 'fabulously gay'? You say that like you're surprised!? :) And no I don't ship, you'll have to collect in person.

what with cupcakes being de rigeur at the moment, it's a tough choice between form and function.

the icing is, to me, very contentious, don't you think TOA? the perfect ratio of cake to icing is an individual choice but it's being tipped over by artistic merits rather than eatability.

and not only is there too much, but the consistency approaches a plug of No More Gaps. again an individual choice, but I prefer my icing to be softer than the cake, not harder...

I've eaten the cupcakes from Cupcakes on Pitt and while they are nice they were not as good as the one that you made. I also think that yours was better than Babycakes in Summer Hill. So good did I think that cupcake was that I'm off to try and buy the book (at this point I may be a little bit cupcake obsessed)

Thanks kind lady!

There are some other nice sounding recipes in the book, even a couple of gluten free ones, and of course some that I wouldn't ever make. I'm thinking I might make the Pink Fairy layer cake with attendant cupcakes for my next birthday... I mean, it's important to feel special on your birthday, right?
