5 Monday Snippets

  1. If you buy an inexpensive shirt from a chain store (no matter how nice it is) you need to make peace with the fact that there is a possibility that you will get on your bus in the morning, and there will be a guy wearing the exact same shirt. He made it look good.
  2. Now that I've lost a noticeable amount of weight, I'm taking a renewed interest in buying clothes. Shopping is so much more fun when you don't have to cringe at the sizes.
  3. My long distance internet boyfriend was right, De-Lovely is just that, de-lovely. I bought the DVD the other day, and love it! I think we have similar taste in films, given our mutual appreciation for Mrs Henderson Presents.
  4. All this 30s and 40s vibe makes me want to wear big padded shoulders, oxford brogue shoes and baggy trousers. Ok, maybe not the baggy trousers, but I love the clothes of this era. When people really dressed up, you know?
  5. One thing I would not deal with though is the constant cloud of cigarrete smoke. It's accurate for the era, but man, the actors must have had to do a major detox after filming was over.

I think you can add to that with
"If you buy an inexpensive shirt from a chain store (no matter how nice it is) you "...need to make peace with the fact that a button will probably pop off at the most inopportune time, or one of the seams has not been sewn properly and bits wil be sticking out!

Well, that's what always happens to me :-(

Yes it is very exciting needing to buy new (smaller) clothes, but alas quiet expensive a habit as well. If only I had kept all my clothes form yesteryear, woudl fit them again AND be in fashion. And i agree, noone dresses up anymore, i think we need to have a proper dress up dinner party one night, minus the smoke haze.

Oooh, count me in on the dinner party. Any excuse to whip out black tie. I'll invite Steve... haha!
I'll put in my vote for the lated 40s early 50s as well. Terrible era for politics and social thought, but great era for clothes and design generally.

It doesn't hurt either that all of Kevin Klein's wardrobe in De-Lovey was tailoured by Mr Armani. Gorgeous!

I'd be up for a dress-up dinner party sometime. Sounds de-lovely.

Hmmm....Andrew, couture du jour off the rack?! Did I not see you front & center at Valentino?!

I've not seen the film but have heard it's 'right up your alley'...so I must check it out.

NO ONE dresses anymore. I've seen tattered jeans at the symphony and the opera here; it begs the question: 'what do YOU deem worthy to dress to the nines for?'

I'm not book smart but I know how to dress for any occasion; it's nearly a lost art. I so envy the movies from the late 40's; swanks dined at supper clubs and swept into black/white tiled foyers in black tie and gowns cut on the bias. Guess I'm gay like that. Yep.

PS-men's 'spectator' shoes are to die for. I have a pair and invariably on the one hot, July day I wear them--someone yells 'faggot.' Nice touch.

Mr Guy, once the extra poundage has completely gone I am taking a vow to wear nothing Hedi Slimane's threads from now on. (Emphasis on the SLIMane) OK, maybe some YSL. Chain store shirts be GONE. I owe myself...no, I DESERVE better.

Because I am that cliche of a fag who loves opera and the theatre, I think a night at the opera or a thrilling new play is worth dressing for. I figure we owe it to Mr Utzon and all the tribulations he had making that glorious Opera House.

I love De-Lovely; mostly for the fact that they actually went where his life went. Also, the songs are simply wonderful

BLOW GABRIEL BLOW! (how could one think that a man that wrote that ISN'T GAY?!?!)
