Metal Sculpture

Metal Sculpture
Originally uploaded by Other Andrew.

I took this picture of an anodised metal sculpture at World Square on my way into work yesterday. The metal is a purplish colour that changes through magenta and bronze depending on the light.

[This is also an experiment in picture posting from my Flickr page, as I was curious to see how it would turn out. Verdict: I'm not wild about the size of the picture or the black border, both things I can probably change - although, so help me, if I touch it I will break it. Clicking the pic takes you to the picture's Flickr page and a larger version, which is somewhat cool.]

Noice, Andrew. Though I have to say that the prior picture you took of the sculpture at World Square titled "Magenta & Violet" is rooly excellent. The colours, wif that afternoon sun, is fully sick mate.

Thanks! (I'm not misreading that, it was a compliment, right?) Fully sick, indeed.

:-)

I agree, Bodhi. That shot with all the purple hues is really cool. I like the faint reflections of the surrounding buildings in that one, too. I can't believe that's the same sculpture, just in different light.

Michael, there's actually two sculptures but they're made of exactly the same materials. The tall (vaguely phallic) one and one which is like a coiled snake sort of thing. Exactly the same colour though. The metal changes tone as you walk around it and whether it's in shadow or not. At night multicoloured LEDs show through the little holes in the sculptures, which I actually dislike. Daytime is much nicer.

I like the vertical one because a) Hello, phallic!, b) the way the buildings press in on it, creating tension and c) the morning sun glinting off the top.

I don't really know much about art, but I totally get that. I like to just bask in the goodness of a painting, but then try to dissect why it makes me feel so oogy. I dawdle at museums.

That caught me as well. But I thought it sounded kinda, ya know, sexy.

I studied Renaissance art history, and now struggle to look at a painting without attempting to analyse the compositional factors etc. Chiarascuro, contrapossto, sfumato... it's like 'art porn' dirty talk to me, makes me all thing.

Like, the glistening tip wasn't sexy enough?

Andrew, we'd be in so much trouble together in the Uffizi.

You better believe it girlfriend.

Then start talking Northern Renaissance (Van Eyck, the 'Master of Flemalle' et al) to me and I'd whisk you off to Amsterdam so fast your loafers wouldn't touch the cobblestones. *sigh* Are we there yet?

Cheers Duane, thanks for the compliment. You've got some great photos on your Flickr site lil' buddy. How much do we love Flickr? I mean, what the hell did we do without it? How did we get through the day?...

TOA, you'll have to take a modern art appreciation course as well, so we can do art-wank together about the underlying metaphor creating an integral dycotomy.

or something ;)
