I Heart Pteropus Poliocephalus

I love bats. LOVE. THEM. Sydney is home to many thousands of Pteropus Poliocephalus or grey headed flying foxes. For quite some years there has been a substantial sized colony of them in the Botanic Gardens, although their numbers have fluctuated over the years.

Strange Fruit

This fact file on an ABC tv children's website even includes facts about how flying foxes do the nasty.

In Flight

They are such a part of Sydney life, from the dusk fly-overs of large flocks of them, to the night time chittering you often hear. Morgan and I hung around these trees in the Botanic Gardens for quite a while, trying to get good pics of them in flight. 9 times out of 10 they are too quick and silent, so you miss them, but I managed to get at least one reasonable pic. [Click them to see larger sizes.]

I'm not the only bat fancier on Das Internetz, Matt likes them too.

"Making love bat-style" the phrasing looks so cute. Its sweet to think they are out there making love, and not just having it off!! Awww...

I still get that whole 'Nosferatu' angle with bats. Though they've been given undue negative imagery in our culture. You've heard the expression "like a bat out of hell...?" Doesn't quite work if one substitutes 'bat' with say, er...cow.

awww... are flying foxes the same as fruit bats? I'm too lazy to google 'em at the moment... they're cute little buggers. when I lived over the road in Homebush we used to get quite a lot in our trees at night from Bicentennary Park. I still get a few here but they don't tend to fly across the freeway... I miss the chitter! but not the poo.

you wouldn't happen to know what the current programme of control for the Botanic Gardens are, would you TOA? I read and also saw on telly a while back how they're killing trees because there's too many of them. the poo is acidic and they strip branches when they hang and feed.

Michael Guy, Speedboat and I went to an Agricultural High School. Some of those cows can be mean!
TOA, are you and Morgster coming to see Steve in his stage debut on the 27th?

Mikey, I hear you - I nearly got gored by Madam once. I'll bet if she was able to poobomb accurately, she'd be deadly in more ways that one...
