5 Things About Wednesday December 10th, 2008: Gainful Employment Edition

  • One and a half weeks into my new job and it's going well! Interesting enough, with enough manageable work, to keep me busy but without the crazy struggles of my last job. And the pay is much, much better.
  • On the downside, there is a large company funded sweets jar (lolly jar, candy jar, pot de confiserie, whatever your term) right next to my workstation. Within arm's reach. Without even too much stretching.
  • To try and counteract its siren call, I took along a plastic container of fruit today. Grapes, lychees and some cut up watermelon.
  • It was delicious... but I still had 4 caramels. I'm only human!
  • The evening news is full of doom, doom, doom tonight. One mining company is shedding 14,000 staff. Estimates of financial sector jobs lost year to date in Sydney is up to 19,000. It makes me so thankful to have gotten into permanent full-time employment, and out of temping. And also so concerned for those facing the end of 2008 without employment.

I can't even TELL you how many times I mention etiquette surrounding the pot de confiserie and am met with blank stares. Philistines.

It's good you added your own sweets just next to it. Hope the 'candy' in the department looks good enough to eat too! *wink*

G'day Andrew. Congrats on the new job. Oh, and I'm not sure if you are a fan, but cutie Jason Mraz has a new polaroid book out called A Thousand Things . I'm posting about it tommorow on my blog. Being a photo buff, I thought you might be interested ... later :-)

We used to get company funded biscuits... originally when I arrived 6 years ago it was Tim Tams and Chocolate Chip Cookies. It quickly moved on to the more boring Nice and Arrowroot biscuits, but then the year before I left they ditched the biscuits entirely... in favour of those flavoured polystyrene disc-like rice cracker things. Ugh. Cost cutting masquerading as a"healthy employee strategy" as of course no one ate them. You've picked a good firm if they supply lollies! :)
