5 Thoughts About 2009, Week 1: Keeping Up Appearances Edition

  • I saw four almost identical boys walking along the street this afternoon. The same height, the same slim build, all probably about 17 or so. All wearing slim knee length shorts, tank tops, baseball caps and ironic sunglasses (big, white plastic framed monstrosities). I couldn't believe it, it was like light infantry from Attack Of The BoyBots.
  • Were we ever so concerned about looking the same as the kids of today seem to be? My memories as a wannabe Blitz Kid are of trying to look really different. (Except for some unfortunate experiments in trying to look like Boy George). But I guess in a way that was a form of wearing a tribal uniform. OMG, we were the hipsters of the 80s...
  • Speaking of appearances, I've noticed an attitude change of my own. Feeling a bit more comfortable about my own appearance. Putting up that silly 'jockstrap on my head' pic was both a symptom and a catalyst in a way. The feedback I've received on it has certainly been encouraging!
  • Good lighting and post editing is your friend. :)
  • I've been thinking a lot about Tall & Handsome today. We're sort of keeping things light as we won't be seeing each other until Easter in all likelihood, but I've been missing him since he left. Long distance is the suck.

What is it with these faded denim spray on shorts and white canvas shoes... the boybots were out in force at Bondi today as well!

Is T&H in WA? (Sorry... I haven't been paying 100% attention here at the back of the class... I know you did say somewhere...). Can you hop over there for a long weekend at some stage before Easter? QuaintArse have some good deals on at the moment. :)

Tom, maybe this is the Summer of the BoyBot!? Yes, T&H is in WA. I just started a new job, so getting any leave is a bit dodgy. Plus I need to lay out some biggish bucks in the next few months for other stuff. le sigh.

Michael, yes that's me! (Who else could I get to stand in front of my bathroom mirror with a jockstrap on their head?...) Oh, and... sure!

I have vivid memories of walking down a street with four of my best friends the year I was 17 and realising that we were all wearing jeans and identical black suede pixie boots. It was 1984 and completely unintentional.

You guys should think yourelves lucky. There aren't any boybots here in Perth! Sadly the mullet is making a huge comeback here; so along with the saggy shit ya bum trousers you might like to reconsider how unlucky you are!

Hmmm I remember the whole Boy George times and then fluorescent Wham moments of course. Looking like Adam Ant was rather popular and his jackets remind me of some of your own sewing talents.

I kinda had a mod thing happening at some point. I went to see Nik Kershaw at the Countdown recordings in Sydney and thought I looked cool, but in retrospect the photos tell me otherwise.

Not sure if the whole huge sunnies on boys was a happening thing in fashion - that naughty Corey kid who partied when home alone (prompting a swat team response) on the Gold Coast seems to have unfortunately influenced a bit of that...

Not nice having a loved one at a distance Andrew... I do agree its so much more fun filling the days with their company than when they leave. Big hugs! Is it true all good things come to good boys who wait? ;) and if the supermarkets are anything to go by Easter is practically round the corner - I saw Easter eggs on the 31st December...

I remember wanting to be Mihael J. Fox in Back to the Future. Trainers, demin jacket, check shirt, braces...ahh swoon. Now I just want him not to have Parkinsons.

Yes...long distance Sucks and NOT is a good way!

There was an unfortunate sheared sweatshirt neckline phase for me, ala FLASHDANCE, that was not, thankfully captured on film.

Jockstrap on head? I'm off and searchin'...
