Good News

I had a follow-up appointment with my sleep specialist late yesterday, and it was so nice get the verdict: not crazy after all!

:)

I had started to doubt myself you see. Started to wonder whether my sleep problems were more psychological than physical. Oh sure, there may well be some degree of cray-zay, but nothing that is related to my insomnia anyway. I discovered I have both a mild case of sleep apnea, and a bad case of a form of Restless Leg Syndrome called PLMS (Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep). At an average of 26 'episodes' an hour I kick my legs more times than a line-up of Rockettes it would seem.

Losing some weight should be enough to improve the sleep apnea situation. I've added around 10cm (4 inches) to my waistline in the past couple of years, and losing weight would also be a big benefit to my health in general. I've been prescribed a mild dosage of a drug normally used to treat Parkinson's Disease for the PLMS, which I'll start in the next day or so (I had to order the drug, as it's not common).

It sort of suits my reductive nature to say Ah, that thing there, that's the reason!, but I also know that if I work at improving my diet and exercise as well then it'll not only improve this situation but my health in general.

Cheese & onion breakfast bagel (with cream cheese filling), I'll miss you. Thanks for the good times.

That is good news! Changing jobs will also help and you can establish a new routine without the bagel (or in my case bacon sandwich)

I loved the graphic at the top of that PLMS website you linked to!

Tom, I know right? I laughed out loud when I saw that graphic and the tagline. SO DRAMATIC.

You're right about the change in routine. My life needs a makeover!

I've been on Requip for the past year for RLS & PLMS. It helps, but I do still have some problems - largely, I think, because of my highly irregular work/sleep schedule. David has the mild sleep apnea, but his trial run with the CPAP the other week didn't go so well.

Mel, is Requip the US name for ropinirole hydrochloride? I don't have the drugs yet (they had to order in a lower dose version for me) but the name here is similar to Requip, but something else. I can't remember exactly what it was but it started with "Re...". Drugs here often have different names to the names overseas.

My EX suffers from RLS. It drove me to the sofa many a night. I'm pleased that your prognosis isn't "le crazee."

I hope the medication in combination with improved diet habits are the winning mix, Andrew. I'm in dire need of dropping a few pounds myself since I stopped that marathon training routine. I had hopes of 'sexercising' myself to a new waistline but alas...have not found a suitable personal trainer.

All good news, Andrew.

Thanks MG. I just wish there was a way of making masturbation burn more calories, because frankly the weight would drop off me.

If masturbation burned calories Kate Moss would be a fat bitch standing next to me.

Don't deny yourself bagels completely, that way lies complete breakout and breakdown of healthy eating. One on special occassions will keep you on the straight and narrow, just like you hips will be!

The dopaminergic drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease are said to be good for the night time movement of PLMS, although I haven't tried them - I still persist without. It is good to know if your iron levels are normal and also reduce any caffeine intake because that may help.

Thanks Q!, I had my iron levels checked a little while back and they were fine but I was interested to read that there may be some link there with PLMS. I usually only have 1, maybe 2, cups of coffee a day and I stop by about mid morning because I'm one of those people that caffeine affects really strongly.

Mindy, regular bagels are fine but this cheese and onion one (with cream cheese) is a heart attack on a plate. Which of course means that it's DELICIOUS. *sigh*

sleep apnea explains a lot of symptoms; by losing weight it often clears up the apnea and lots more; i've seen people get off of medication for depression and sleep merely by addressing their sleep apnea.
Those Rx for parkinson's and RLS- be mindful they sometimes make a person have cravings to do odd/new things, like gambling!
